Voice Games For Kids

Voice games remove the hardest part of gaming for a small child: the controller. If a child can talk, they can play, which makes these a good fit well before fine motor control catches up with their enthusiasm.

No controller means a much lower barrier

Coordinating two thumbsticks is a learned skill, and for a four-year-old it is the thing standing between them and the game. Shouting is not a learned skill. That is the whole reason these work early: the input is something children are already extremely good at.

Speaking practice that does not feel like practice

Because the games only advance when a word is said clearly, children get repeated practice at speaking up and pronouncing words, with immediate feedback that has nothing to do with a grown-up correcting them. Guess the Picture and the word games are the most useful here.

Good ones to start with

Start with a volume game like Scream Ball, because the cause and effect is instant and there is no way to get it wrong. Move to Guess the Picture or Emoji Game when you want something with words in it. Sheep Squeeze is worth trying with children who like to sing.

What parents should know

The games need microphone permission to work, which your browser will ask for and which you can revoke at any time from the address bar. Volume and pitch games do not transcribe anything at all. Word games use the browser's speech recognition, and what we receive is recognised text rather than stored audio.

Managing the noise

The shouting games are genuinely loud, which is the point and also the problem. Keeping sessions short, or steering towards the word and pitch games indoors, keeps everyone happier. It is also worth telling children to shout from the belly rather than the throat, which is louder and easier on their voice.

Common questions

What age are these suitable for?

The volume games work for children as young as three or four, since they need no reading and no words. The word and quiz games assume reading and a reasonable vocabulary, so they suit roughly seven and up.

Will the games understand a child's voice?

Usually, though less reliably than an adult's, because speech recognition is trained mostly on adult speech. The volume and pitch games have no such issue since they are not recognising words at all.

Can my child play without an account?

Yes. You can play without signing in. An account saves progress and scores across devices, and some games unlock with coins earned by playing.
